  1. 4.  Octavius Bourchier BOWKER was born in 1816 in England (son of Miles BOWKER and Anna Maria MITFORD); died on 23 Jul 1899 in Zastron, Free State.

    Notes:

    1. He was known as the best shot on the eastern frontierand was report ed to have killed seven and wounded three Springbok with nine shots.
    2. He was a burger of the Free State who participated in the war against M oshesh in 1852 and the farm Champagne in the Zastron district was given h im for his services during that war.
    3. After his death on the farm it was passed to his daughter Ella and beca me part of her husband, William Henry Surmon's estate. The farm, Champag ne has been in the Surmon family for about 120 years.
    3. Champagne obtained it's name due to it's many fountains. Some say the re were 80 in the early days. Many have since dried up.

  1. 8.  Miles BOWKER was born in 1765 in England; died on 25 Mar 1839 in Albany.

    Notes:

    1. Miles was the eldest son of Thomas Bowker. Born at Deckhams Hall, Gates head, Durham. He was a ship owner in partnership with his brother, Benjam in but trade was ruined by European wars. Started merino sheep farmi ng in Devon and later in Wiltshire.
    2. Sold up and came out to the Cape in 1820 aboard the 'Weymouth'. Party c onsisted of 23 people.
    3. His first grant was Oliveburn and then Tharfield. He was the first m an to import merino sheep from England but the sheep didn't do well at t he coast so moved inland and cattle farmed at Tharfield where he died a nd was buried.
    4. During the Sixth Frontier War of 1834 he buried all the family silv er on Tharfield but it has never been recovered.
    5. His name appears on the memorial on Tharfield farm
