Occupation | He arrived in South Africa in 1883 and obtained employment in retail store in Cape Town founded by John Garlick, ran his own shop in Stellenbosch between 1885-1886, moved to Kimberley in Oct.1886 and opened a small store in Jones Street, joined by his brothers Tom and Joseph they set up new branches in Durban and Johannesburg, after conclusion of the Anglo-Boer War, the store in Kimberley was a fast-expanding business and by 1908 further branches were opened in Benoni, Tvl., 1918 in Pretoria and in 1919 in Lourengo Marques, by 1920 the firm became a public company which evolved into a major retail Enterprise i.e. John Orrs, with headoffices in Kimberley; John was elected to the city council of Kimberley in 1905, elected mayor in 1916-18, as well as president of the Kimberley Chamber of Commerce, keen gardener and founder of Griqualand West Horticultural Society [1] | |
