  1. He was born on Wilgerivier. He and his brother Jacobus bought the fa rm Wilgerivier (2571 morgen 200 square roods or 2202 hectares) from the ir mother's estate by deed of sale dated 04 06 1902 (Cape Archives MOOC 13 /1/1282 R226) in which they held equal shares. 2. Hendrik and his wife provided a home for his brother Jacobus who w as a bachelor but the latter moved out to take up residence in an old home stead about two kilometres to the east. 3. In November 1910 the farm was subdivided and on 7 June 1911 the deduct ed portion which was named Glencoe went to Hendrik by Deed of Transfer 407 7/1911 and the remainder of Wilgerivier became the property of Jacob us by Deed of Transfer 4078/1911. 4. For years there had been considerable acrimony between the brothers a nd they no longer communicated. It is told that Hendrik wanted to name h is farm Twislaagte (Squabble Valley) but was persuaded by his father-in-la w, Robert Bluett Roberson, to rather use the name Glencoe which is reput ed to mean Valley of Grief. There is considerable conjecture about the cau se of the ill-feeling between the two brothers but, a century later, wh en the participants and their immediate descendants are all decease d, it is generally agreed that the problem centred around Hendrik's wife S arah Magdalene. There is considerable evidence that indicates that her you ngest son was fathered by her brother-in-law Jacobus. For summary see fami ly documents. 5. He died at in his town house at 8 Cathcart Street. 6. Property in estate consisted of the farm Glencoe which went to the elde st son and Erf 66, Block F, Somerset East which became the property of t he only daughter.
