  [S2] SESA, (Nationale Boekhandel). Viscount. British statesman and scholar. At an early age Bryce achieved distinction with his classic The Holy Roman Empire (1864). He entered politics in 1880 without abandoning academic interest; his American Common wealth, another classic, was published in 1888. After holding cabinet rank in the Liberal government (1891-95) Bryce became ambassador in Washington (1907-13). In 1895 he toured Southern Africa extensively, and his Impressions of South Africa (1897) was a sober and keen appraisal in which he advocated a British policy of tact and patience; he foresaw that the Native problem would become increasingly important. In a preface to a later edition (1899) he expressed himself in favour of a generous peace; he was critical of the pre-war approach of Chamberlain and Milner, and dewed the existence of a widespread Afrikaner 'conspiracy' to oust the British from South Africa. As the Second Anglo-BoerWar went on he aligned himself with the pro-Boers in condemning farm-burning and the concentration camps. Bryce, created a viscount in 194, was a man of many parts - widely travelled, a mountaineer, and the author of many books.
