  [S2] SESA, (Nationale Boekhandel). Soldier, politician, farmer. Commissioned in the British Army in 1885, he served in the Second Anglo-Boer War, saw action at Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Paardeberg, Poplar Grove and Driefontein, was wounded at Magersfontein and twice mentioned in dispatches. Byron was created C.M.G. for acting A.D.C. to King George V when, as Duke of Cornwall, he toured Australia and South Africa in 190F. He was back in Australia until 1903 when he returned to South Africa to settle in the Orange River Colony as manager of the Duke of Westminster's estates. In the First World War he joined the commandos as a simple burgher in 1914, later to become Inspector General of Communications in German South-West Africa and to command the and infantry Brigade in the advance on Aus. He raised the 5th South African Infantry and commanded it in German East Africa, gaining promotion in the field for leading the moon light bayonet charge through Reata-Latema Nek. In Central Africa he captured General Von Lettow's second-in-command, Von Gravert, as well as his whole force. He was wounded and mentioned four times in dispatches. He subsequentely served in Flanders and as second-in-command of a special expedition through Kurdistan to the Caucasus to organise the Armenians against the Turks. He received the order of St. Stanislaus (1916), the Distinguished Service Order (19y), and was made Officier Legion d'Honneur (1918). Byron entered the Legislative Council of the Orange River Colony in 1907. He subsequently became Senator in the Union Parliament (19FO-20) and member of Parliament for East London North (192I-35).
