• Notes

  1. He was 13 at the battle of 1835 when the family took refuge in Bathurs t. 2. He served in the Seventh and Eighth frontier Wars ( 1847-7 and 1850-183 1) when he was appointed commandant of the Frontier Police which annexed T embuland in 1875. He attained the rank of Colonel and was appointed Chi ef Commissioner in Basutoland in 1877. 3. He was a keen collector of butterflies. Some of his collections a re in South Kensington, Cape Town and Durban Museums. 4. He was a Justice of the Peace and FLS, FZS, FRGS, FSS 5. For a period he was Chief Comissioner for the Griqualand Diamond fields . 6. He never married and died at his home Malvern, Natal at the age of 74. 7. Estate TAB MHG 2976
