  1. He was a negro who arrived inTable Bay on 05 06 1807 aboard the "Presid ent" ex Boston, USA and found work as a whale harpooner in False Bay for C loete, Reitz & Anderson. \laater he was employed by Reitz on one of the i slands off Danger Point (Gansbaai vicinity) to catch seals. This island st ill bears his name. Mr H L Hill, land surveyor of Hermanus, has establish ed that the Government decided to take over the offshore islands and offer ed him 3.4 ha of land in exchange for Dyer's Island. The land allocated w as adjacent to Herries Bay and, apparently, he had it subdivided into plo ts which were sold off, thus starting what became the village of Hawston. 2.
