  	His mother was alive in England and his father was deceased. It is not known what ship he arrived on but there were several ships that arrived with few boys on that are not listed in any manifests and he would have been one of these. He could read and write but recieved no schooling or religious instruction. He was apprenticed to Paul Retief of Groot Drakenstein and was employed as a farm labourer. He was given sufficient food and good clothes and he was healthy and happy but very small. In 1849 he was a labourer working in Groot Drakenstein for Pieter Izak De Villiers and earned an average of 9d. per day. Also in 1849 during the pressing season he worked for 3 weeks for J. P. De Villiers and earned 9d. per day He was also listed as a labourer with the Corn Farmers during the late harvest season residing at "Pniel Insitution" in Groot Drakenstein and was employed by Jakob de Villiers at Kuilenberg for 4 weeks earning 1s. 6d. & 2s 6d. per day and 1/2 muid barley and 1 muid of corn.
