  He followed in his father's and Octavius' footsteps in that he was a go od shot and very keen on hunting. In 1946 he came to Champagne to manage it for his father who had lost h is sight. The farm was known for it's fine wool and large orchard of decid uous fruit. At that time they used two furrow hand ploughs drawn by Clydes dale horses. Jackals and Lynx were a great problem to the sheep farmers a nd had to be hunted. All the animals had to be dipped every two weeks as t he ticks caused paralysis and other deseases.
